Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of using the skimming technique in teaching reading comprehension on the academic achievement of seventh-grade students at SMPN 2 Lhokseumawe. The research employed an experimental method using a control and experimental group design. The experimental group was taught using the skimming technique, while the control group received conventional instruction. The instruments used were multiple-choice reading tests (pre-test and post-test) and a questionnaire regarding recount texts. The results of data analysis revealed a significant difference in the post-test scores between students in the experimental group and those in the control group. The average post-test score of the experimental group was higher. A t-test showed statistical significance at p < 0.05, indicating that the use of the skimming technique has a significant impact on improving students' reading comprehension. Additionally, the questionnaire results indicated that most students had a good understanding of recount text structure and found the content interesting and relatable to real-life experiences. Teaching recount texts combined with the skimming technique enhanced students’ reading comprehension and learning motivation.
